Plastic Surgery Preparation

Preparing for Plastic Surgery

Thoughtful preparation can help you approach your procedure feeling informed, organised and ready for the healing journey ahead.

Our Role

Supporting your journey — not performing your surgery.

Inkmed.INT does not perform plastic surgery. Your plastic surgeon and medical team are responsible for your procedure, medical assessment, surgical instructions and clinical care. Inkmed.INT provides supportive preparation and guidance relating to the skin, anticipated scarring and the longer-term scar journey where appropriate.

Preparing for plastic surgery is about more than the day of your procedure. It is also about understanding what may happen before, during recovery and as your scars mature.

Every surgical journey is different. The procedure being performed, your skin, the location of the incisions and your individual healing response can all influence your recovery and the appearance of your scars.

Preparing in advance gives you an opportunity to understand the journey ahead, ask questions and create realistic expectations about healing.

At Inkmed.INT, the focus is on supporting you around your surgical journey while respecting the role and instructions of your plastic surgeon.

Good preparation starts with understanding the journey. Surgery is one part of the process. Healing, scar maturation and your skin’s response continue long after the procedure itself.

Your Medical Care Comes First

Start With Your Plastic Surgeon

Your plastic surgeon is responsible for determining whether a procedure is appropriate for you and for providing the medical instructions associated with your surgery.

Any medical preparation, medication changes, fasting instructions, testing, wound care or restrictions should come directly from your surgeon or medical team.

If advice from another source differs from the instructions given by your surgeon, always discuss it with your surgical team before making changes.

02
Understanding Your Journey

Your Inkmed Consultation

A pre-surgery consultation provides an opportunity to look beyond the procedure itself and discuss the skin and scar journey that may follow.

Where relevant, the consultation may include discussion around:

  • The procedure you are planning
  • The anticipated incision areas
  • Your previous scarring history
  • Your skin characteristics
  • Your concerns about future scars
  • Your expectations for recovery
  • Longer-term scar care possibilities
  • Questions to discuss with your surgeon

This is supportive preparation and does not replace your surgeon’s medical consultation or pre-operative assessment.

03
Before Your Procedure

Preparing Your Skin

Healthy, well-cared-for skin provides the environment in which your body’s natural healing process will take place.

Depending on your skin and the procedure you are planning, appropriate skin preparation may be discussed during your consultation.

Not every treatment is suitable immediately before surgery. The timing of any skin treatment should therefore take your surgical date into account and, where necessary, be discussed with or cleared by your surgeon.

04
Think Beyond Surgery Day

Preparing for Recovery

Recovery can be easier to navigate when you have thought about the practical side of healing before your procedure.

Your surgeon will give you procedure-specific recovery instructions. In addition, it can be useful to prepare your home and support system in advance.

  • Arrange help where you may need it
  • Plan transport for surgery and appointments
  • Prepare a comfortable recovery area
  • Keep your surgeon’s instructions easily accessible
  • Plan time away from work and responsibilities
  • Know who to contact if you have medical concerns

Your surgeon’s instructions regarding movement, garments, dressings, medication, bathing, wound care and activity always take priority.

05
Setting Realistic Expectations

Understanding Your Future Scars

Where there is a surgical incision, some degree of scarring is a normal part of the body’s healing process.

A new scar can change considerably over time. Its colour, texture and appearance during the early stages of healing are not necessarily representative of how it will eventually look once it has matured.

Every person heals differently. Genetics, skin characteristics, the location of the incision, the surgical procedure and the body’s individual healing response can all influence how a scar develops.

Understanding this before surgery can help create realistic expectations for the months that follow.

Medical & Surgical Care

Your Plastic Surgeon

Your surgeon is responsible for your surgery, medical assessment and determining whether you are suitable for the planned procedure.

Your surgical team should also be your primary point of contact for wound care, medication, complications, restrictions and medical concerns during recovery.

Supportive Care

Inkmed.INT

Inkmed.INT can support your preparation by helping you understand the skin and scar journey associated with surgery.

Once healing has progressed appropriately, longer-term scar treatments may also be explored where suitable and when medically appropriate.

06
Surgery Comes First

Healing After Your Procedure

Immediately after surgery, the priority is safe recovery and following the instructions provided by your plastic surgeon and medical team.

Early surgical wounds and scars need time to heal. Inkmed treatments are not a replacement for surgical wound care and should not interfere with your surgeon’s recovery plan.

Once the area has healed sufficiently, the scar can be reassessed and future options can be discussed where appropriate.

Your surgeon remains your first point of contact after surgery.

If you are concerned about your incision, wound healing, pain, swelling, bleeding, signs of infection or any other medical symptoms following surgery, contact your plastic surgeon or appropriate medical provider rather than waiting for an Inkmed appointment.

07
The Longer-Term Journey

Reviewing Your Scar

As healing progresses, the appearance of your scar will continue to change. Once the scar has reached an appropriate stage of healing, it can be assessed to determine whether additional treatment may be beneficial.

Depending on the scar and surrounding skin, treatments such as microneedling may later be considered to address certain texture concerns.

Where a mature scar is lighter or noticeably different in colour from the surrounding skin, medical tattooing or scar camouflage may also be considered where appropriate.

Treatment is individual. Some scars may require no further intervention, while others may benefit from a gradual treatment plan.

Prepare Understand your procedure, your skin and the healing journey before surgery.
Heal Follow your surgeon’s instructions and give your body the time it needs to recover.
Reassess Once healing has progressed, your scar can be reviewed and future options explored where appropriate.
Before. During. Beyond.

Your surgery is one day. Your healing journey continues beyond it.

Preparing for surgery gives you an opportunity to understand not only the procedure ahead, but also the changes your body and skin may experience during recovery.

Your plastic surgeon guides your medical and surgical care. Inkmed.INT supports the skin and scar journey around it.

With thoughtful preparation, realistic expectations and the right care at the right stage, you can approach the journey feeling more informed about what comes next.
